Pollokshields Mutual Aid (PMA) is a group of individuals living in the postcode of G41, Glasgow, who work collectively to support each other and people in our community. We are part of the wider Glasgow Mutual Aid (GMA) network.
PMA was founded in March 2020 during the first national lockdown resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Since this time our collective work has included the establishing and running of Pollokshields Community Food Point, enabling the provision of free food to those unable to access it; shopping trips on behalf of individuals and families self-isolating; picking up prescriptions for vulnerable people; phone support for those experiencing isolation; cooking hot food for delivery and pick up at The Food Point; supporting local schools with the renovation of their facilities; and joining other community and activist groups in working to prevent deportations of individuals in our community.
Pollokshields Mutual Aid’s aims are to:
Facilitate a channel of communication and a network of community support between those requesting support and those with the capacity and resources to respond to those requests.
Focus on the most vulnerable and those in the greatest need; supporting vulnerable people and households, those who have been left out from other services, or those who face the greatest risk.
Promote community advocacy and help those in need of additional support identify resources and services within existing organisations.
Act and impact as locally as possible, recognising the strength and sustainability of local community, connections, trust, knowledge and reciprocity.
Uphold the values of mutual aid, building solidarity and collective, anti-authoritarian decision-making across our community.
Add capacity to other existing community organisations where possible and appropriate.
We will do what we can to the best of our abilities, but recognise our limits.
